Merrilee Gaffney Johnson
President
Merrilee moved to Chico in 1971 with a recreational certification as a volleyball referee. As she began to meet volleyball folks and coaches, they began to call and ask her to referee high school matches. In 1973, she was asked to organize an association to recruit, train, and assign volleyball officials for high schools in the surrounding areas. That was the birth of the Northern California Volleyball Association - Chico as we know it today. Merrilee served as the head of the association/assignor and a high school & collegiate volleyball official until 2000. At that time, she retired and left the NCVOA-Chico in the hands of senior leadership who refined bylaws and procedures to move the group into its current mode of operation. Even in retirement, Merrilee maintained an active membership each year and was elected to serve as President of NCVOA-Chico at the end of the 2008 season.
